Clarinet Entrance Audition Requirements
Bachelor of Music, Visiting Student:
Major and minor scales (3 forms) through 7 sharps and 7 flats. One slow etude, one fast etude. Portions of two contrasting solos from the standard repertoire.
Master of Music, Doctor of Musical Arts, Performer Diploma, Artist Diploma:
Major and minor scales (3 forms) through 7 sharps and 7 flats. Portions of three contrasting solos from the standard repertoire. Three contrasting orchestral excerpts from the standard repertoire.
Bachelor of Music Education, Master of Music Education, Bachelor of Science (Outside Field):
Major and minor scales (3 forms) through 4 sharps and 4 flats. One slow etude, one fast etude. Two pages of a solo from the standard repertoire.
NOTE:
- None of the auditions require, nor allow, piano accompaniment.
- All students will be required to do some sight reading.
- All DM students will have to take a 2 hour written "clarinet literacy test," which will test basic knowledge about the acoustics, history, pedagogy and repertoire (solo, chamber and orchestral) of the instrument.
Campus Visits: Prospective students are encouraged to visit the Bloomington campus prior to their audition. Meeting our Admissions Office staff, touring the music facilities, observing master classes and large ensemble rehearsals, and scheduling a lesson/interview will equip you to make an informed decision about attending Indiana University. Information about the daily (11 a.m.) tours of the music facilities can be obtained from Music Admissions (musicadm@indiana.edu).
